The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS launched its report "In Danger" ahead of AIDS 2022, or the International AIDS Conference in Montreal, Canada in early August. UNAIDS reported that COVID-19 and other global crises had affected the progress of the response against HIV resulting to more people at risk of the virus, and less resources for the response.

"These data show the global AIDS response in severe danger. If we are not making rapid progress then we are losing ground," said UNAIDS Executive Director Winnie Byanyima. Rapid progress in the response had been what was needed in the Philippines, being one of the countries with the biggest increases in the number of new HIV infections since 2015.

The response slow down meant that over one million more HIV infections happened against global targets. This trend could mean 1.2 million new HIV infection in 2025, in the year that UN member states had committed to a goal of less than 370 thousand new infections. In 2021, among key populations, MSM have 28 times the risk of infection compared to people of the same age and gender identity while people who inject drugs have 35 times the risk, sex workers 30 times the risk, and transgender women 14 times the risk.

In 2021, fewer people were on HIV treatment than ever in over a decade, resulting to 650 thousand AIDS deaths despite effective treatments for HIV and opportunistic infections.
