PEP for HIV prevention: are we missing opportunities to reduce new infections?
[Excerpt] PEP (or post-exposure prophylaxis) is an efficacious HIV prevention option that has largely been underutilized. This defines a missed opportunity to prevent HIV infection associated with high-risk exposures in high-burden disease settings. A shift in thinking around the use of PEP by policy makers and implementing programs is needed as we move to one of the most exciting eras in HIV prevention.
